The above photo is Mount Kilauela, one of the main active volcanoes in the park. There are 5 volcanoes on the Big Island. They are Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and Kilauea. Hawaii is located over a hot spot, and that is what causes there to be volcanoes. This is unique, as most volcanoes are located on plate boundaries. All the volcanoes in Hawaii are shield volcanoes, and do not have explosive eruptions, as opposed to volcanoes like cinder cone or composite.
